Message from the President
Welcome to our June Newsletter,
I hope your summer has been enjoyable so far and only continues to improve. I just got back from our Institute of Industrial Engineers' Annual Conference at the Doral Resort in sunny, cloudy, hot and humid, thunder storming Miami. I am originally from Cleveland and we have a saying, "if you don't like the weather wait an hour, it will change." That was certainly Miami this past week, but all-in-all the weather was great and the surroundings were fantastic. There is nothing betting than spending a week with industrial engineers.
The conference attendance was up this year from last year, even with the current economic conditions. Next year's conference will be in Mexico and the following year it will be in Reno.
At this year's conference Mr. Neal Schmeidler was awarded the SEMS Management Award. SEMS is the Society for Engineering and Management Systems. Neal has a long and distinguished career in industrial engineering and management. Previously, Neal was awarded our chapter's Man-of-the-Quarter-Century award for his outstanding dedication to IIE Chapter 14. The recipient of our chapter's first quarter century went to Marvin E. Mundel, Ph.D. Our chapter also sponsors the Marvin Mundel Memorial Scholarship fund within IIE.
Not at our conference but equally impressive two other events to note. Martin Franklin, Chapter 14's Vice President recently participated on the winning team at the First Annual GW Business Plan Competition with an innovative tour guide business plan for Keen Guides. Kendal Roberts, Chapter 14's Treasurer has been recognized by the Institute of Industrial Engineers as their Human Factor Representative across all non DoD Government Agencies.
My sincerest congratulations to Neal, Martin and Kendal.
Until next month,
Martin Franklin Vice-President IIE National Capital Chapter
